Colored PPF combines a new color or visual effect with a protective film over your paint. Start with the look you want, then compare the exact product, local warranty and installer’s coverage plan.
Choose color and finish separately
- Keep the paint color: explore clear PPF, with gloss or softer-finish options. Compare film profiles and understand finishes.
- Change the color: explore colored PPF, then choose the sheen available for that exact film. Gloss, satin and matte describe surface appearance, not whether the film is clear or colored.
- Add an effect: metallic, color-shift and patterned films create another set of choices. Some are translucent. STEK says DYNOprism’s appearance depends on the paint underneath. See the manufacturer’s example.

Before you book
Ask the installer to put these details in the quote:
- Exact film family, color name/code and finish. Is it an opaque color change, a translucent effect, or a clear film?
- A physical sample and, for translucent or effect films, a preview over a similar paint color. Look at it outdoors and from different angles before choosing.
- Which panels and door openings will be covered, and which edges will the film wrap around? Where will the original paint stay visible? Ask where joins or extra pieces of film will be needed, and whether any trim will be removed and refitted.
- The installation method and training appropriate to that film. Ask to see completed work using the same product family.
- The applicable local warranty, including any separate color-change coverage, exclusions, registration and maintenance requirements.
- The replacement plan: can a damaged panel be replaced, how will shade and finish be checked, and what happens if that color is discontinued?

Questions worth asking
Is colored PPF the same as a vinyl wrap?
Both can change a vehicle’s appearance, but “wrap” alone does not identify its construction or protective performance. Get the product data sheet. Compare its layers, installed thickness, stated impact protection, topcoat behavior, care and warranty. For example, Avery specifies TPU for PrismaPro; that is a statement about that product, not a rule for every film sold as PPF. PrismaPro data sheet · Understanding film specifications
Can I pick a color from a screen?
Use a screen to shortlist, then examine the real film. XPEL says displayed colors are for reference only. STEK warns that DYNOprism pictures and production runs can differ. A sample helps you judge the look; it cannot guarantee how every panel or future replacement will match. XPEL sample guidance · STEK appearance notes
Can one damaged panel be replaced?
XPEL says individual COLOR PPF panels can be replaced, but the new material may have a slightly different hue. Separately, Avery’s PrismaPro sheet warns about roll/lot color variation and directional appearance. Keep the film name, color code and installation record, and ask the installer to assess a replacement beside the existing film before proceeding. XPEL FAQ · PrismaPro data sheet · Removing and replacing PPF
Is colored PPF installed wet or dry?
It depends on the film. Wet application uses an application liquid to position the film; dry application positions the film without that liquid. For example, Avery’s Spectrix uses wet application and PrismaPro uses dry application. The installer should follow the current instructions for the exact film and region. Color alone is not an installation method. Spectrix · PrismaPro · Installation references
Does a global brand sell the same colors everywhere?
Do not assume so. These links point to specific regional or international catalogs. Ask the local supplier to confirm the exact color code, lead time, installer support and governing warranty before paying a deposit. Catalog breadth is not a local-availability check.
