New PPF: washing, bubbles and everyday care

When can you wash it? Should that bubble be there? Here’s what to do after the film goes on, and when to get the installer’s help.

Have a look before you drive away

Walk around the car with the installer. Check that the agreed panels are covered and ask them to point out the edges and joins.

If a patch or mark worries you, show them while you are there. Take a photo. If they want to see it again later, agree a date and what change you should look for.

When can I wash it?

Get a clear first-wash date before leaving. If the car has also been ceramic-coated, the advice needs to account for both products.

XPEL says to wait 48 hours before washing ULTIMATE PLUS, ULTIMATE FUSION and STEALTH, or 72 hours for COLOR PPF. Other films can have different waiting times, so use the one given for yours.

Is a bubble or cloudy patch normal?

Sometimes fluid from fitting the film is still visible underneath. Avery describes this with its wet-applied SPF films and says it can clear as the film dries.

That doesn’t tell you what every bubble is. Send your installer a clear photo and ask whether they need to see the car. If they suggest waiting, agree when to check it again. Contact them sooner if it grows or an edge starts lifting. Don’t pop, heat, press out or peel the area.

Which cleaner should I use?

Get the cleaner name when you collect the car so you don’t have to guess at the shop. A cleaner, wax or polish that suits one film may be wrong for another finish.

For 3M Pro Series 200 Gloss, the advice is a wet, non-abrasive, solvent-free cleaner at pH 6–8. Avoid waxes with dyes, abrasive polishes and rubbing compounds.

Avery’s January 2025 brochure specifically says not to wax Matte. Its wider care advice is inconsistent, so ask what it currently recommends for your Supreme Defense Gloss or Matte film before buying treatments.

Keep bugs off and pressure away from the edges

XPEL advises prompt removal of insect mess and stains with its Film Cleaner for ULTIMATE PLUS, ULTIMATE FUSION and STEALTH. It also warns against high-pressure water near the film edges.

If something lands on the film before the first-wash date, ask how to clean that spot safely. If a mark remains after cleaning approved for your film, stop and ask the installer to inspect it. Tell them what landed on the car and which products you used. Care rules differ: 3M’s September 2026 guidance for Pro Series 200 and Series 150, 100 and 50 cautions against alcohol-based, strongly acidic or alkaline cleaners. Avoid trying stronger chemicals or abrasives without product-specific advice.

When should I call the installer?

  • An edge starts lifting or peeling.
  • The film has a tear, puncture or deep cut.
  • A patch changes color, spreads or becomes more cloudy.
  • A mark stays after the recommended cleaning.
  • Something you agreed to watch hasn’t improved by the follow-up date.

Send photos that show the problem

Send one photo of the whole panel and one close-up. Include the fitting date, when you first noticed the problem and anything used to wash or treat the area.

Ask whether they need to see the car and what to avoid in the meantime. They can then work out the cause and whether the film warranty or the shop’s policy covers it.

Keep these together

  • Invoice, film name and list of covered panels
  • Any coating name and care advice
  • Warranty and registration confirmation, if required
  • First-wash date and any follow-up appointment
  • Installer contact details
