Gloss, matte or satin: which look do you want?
Gloss, Satin and Matte are separate choices. Follow the exact product description and compare samples on your paint.

Do you want to keep the shine or change it?
Gloss gives a reflective look; matte and satin give a softer appearance. Compare the exact film on your paint, because the labels alone do not show how it will look. In this guide, XPEL STEALTH is listed as satin; Avery Supreme Defense Matte and ORAGUARD PPF2815MF+ are listed as matte.
Some manufacturers use both words in their descriptions. Avery also describes Supreme Defense Matte as satin on its product page. Compare a sample of the exact film rather than treating the labels as a shared measurement scale.
Look at a sample before choosing
See the exact film on a car with a similar paint color before booking. Look at it in daylight, including reflections, surface texture and the edge beside any uncovered paint. If something looks uneven, ask whether it’s in the paint, the film or the fitting.
These viewing tips can help you decide what you like; they aren’t test results or brand ratings. Forum descriptions of “orange peel” can’t tell you what’s causing an uneven finish on your car.
Checking the appearance through sunglasses
If you often wear polarized glasses, bring them when you look at a sample or finished vehicle in daylight. For an existing concern, note whether you see it with the naked eye, through glasses, or only in a filtered photograph, and which panels and viewing angles show it.
Share that description and photos with the installer. Photos can record the concern, but photos alone cannot establish its cause or whether a repair is needed. Do not polish or heat the area just to chase a pattern seen through a filter.
A matte look doesn’t tell you how water behaves
The finish tells you how the film looks. Water-repellent features are a separate detail.
3M describes Pro Series 200 Gloss as hydrophobic, and Avery uses the same term for Supreme Defense Matte’s topcoat. XPEL’s current STEALTH sheet says hydrophilic. Those descriptions don’t add up to a ranking of which film protects best.
Check before adding wax or a coating
Don’t assume a product you use on gloss paint will suit matte film or keep the same look. Ask what cleaner or treatment goes with the finish you choose.
Avery’s January 2025 care brochure specifically says not to wax Matte. Its wider care advice is inconsistent, so get current advice for Supreme Defense Matte before buying a treatment.
