What will the PPF warranty actually pay for?

A long warranty sounds reassuring. The useful question is what happens if the film goes wrong, gets damaged or needs replacing.

A fault in the film is different from damage to it

A warranty may cover the film turning yellow or cracking because something is wrong with it. That doesn’t mean it pays every time a stone hits the car.

For example, XPEL’s terms cover faults such as yellowing, cracking, blistering and layers separating, but exclude physical-impact damage. Ask the installer to explain the everyday situations you would have to pay for yourself.

Who pays for taking it off and fitting new film?

Replacing the film can involve more than a new piece of material. Ask who pays for removing the old film, fitting the new one and any work on the paint.

If XPEL agrees to replace faulty ULTIMATE PLUS or STEALTH, it covers parts and labor and chooses the installer. The original warranty clock keeps running after replacement. Avery’s terms describe replacement film or credit at its discretion; don’t assume they promise paint repairs or payment for all fitting costs.

Where you live can change the cover

Use the warranty supplied where you are having the work done. A number on an overseas website may not apply to your car.

Avery Supreme Defense Matte, for example, has a seven-year limited warranty in the USA and Canada, shortened by two years in New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Southern California and Hawaii. “Southern California” is not defined more precisely in the footnote. That reduction is not attached to Supreme Defense Gloss.

What happens if you sell the car?

Some warranties stay with the first owner. SunTek’s May 2025 USA/Canada terms and Avery’s USA/Canada terms do not transfer to a new owner. XPEL allows the remaining term to transfer with proof of the original installation date.

3M’s USA/Canada card also covers the original buyer only. It requires online registration and asks you to keep the completed card and original invoice. It does not give a registration deadline.

Features and warranty cover can differ

A film can be sold with a water-repellent surface without a warranty that promises that property will last for the whole term.

SunTek’s May 2025 USA/Canada warranty is one example. The Reaction entry covers cracking, bubbling and yellowing, but does not list discoloration as covered. It also excludes the durability of the water-repellent properties. These detailed terms come from a manufacturer-written copy hosted by distributor SAGR Products; get the current local version before buying. SunTek’s current North American page confirms the twelve-year headline.

Five things to ask before paying

  • Does this warranty apply to this film where I live?
  • What damage, stains, coatings or repainted areas are excluded?
  • Do I need to register, and what paperwork should I keep?
  • Who pays for removal and fitting if a claim is accepted?
  • Will a new owner have any cover if I sell the car?
