PPF or ceramic coating: which do I need?

Worried about stone chips, or mainly want easier cleaning? That’s the place to start when choosing between film, a coating or both.

Stone chips or easier washing?

For flying grit and stone chips, PPF adds a physical layer over the panels you cover. If your main aim is easier cleaning, ask what a ceramic coating would add.

XPEL’s UK guidance says its ceramic coatings are not designed to stop rock chips. Its FUSION PLUS PAINT & PPF coating is described as water-repellent, with improved scratch resistance, for use on painted surfaces and PPF.

Neither makes the car damage-proof

A hard enough impact can still damage film and paint. A coating still needs care and cleaning.

You may see “9H” in coating descriptions. In XPEL’s PAINT & PPF sheet, that refers to a pencil-hardness test. It doesn’t tell you whether a stone hitting the car will leave a chip.

Do I need both?

Not automatically. One option is PPF where you want chip protection, with a compatible coating over it or elsewhere on the car. Ask what the coating adds to the film you’re already paying for.

Some films already have water-repellent features. 3M describes that for Pro Series 200, and LLumar describes easy-wash benefits for Valor. An extra coating should have a reason you find useful.

Get the pairing right

Have both product names written on the quote and confirm that they can be used together. If the car already has a coating, tell the installer before the work starts.

XPEL’s UK advice is to apply the coating after its PPF; existing paint protectants can interfere with the film sticking. That preparation is something for the installer to assess.

With matte or satin film, ask to see a sample of the proposed combination. XPEL’s UK guidance notes that some coatings can change STEALTH’s appearance.

Ask what the extra cost buys you

  • What will the coating add to this film?
  • Which panels get film, coating or both?
  • Does the price include preparing any existing coating or repaired paint?
  • When can I get the car wet and wash it?
  • Will I need paid maintenance or inspections?
  • Who should I call if there’s a problem?

Leave with one clear care plan

If you choose both, get washing and care advice that accounts for both. Don’t simply use whichever first-wash time is shorter.

Also ask about ongoing warranty requirements. XPEL’s FUSION PLUS care page calls for annual inspections by the original certified installer to keep its warranty. Confirm the terms that come with your installation.
