Buying a used car with PPF already installed
Questions to ask about existing film, paperwork, condition and the handover before buying a used car.
On this page
1. Find out what is actually covered
Ask the seller to show you the covered panels. Does “full front” include the whole hood and fenders, or only part of them? Are the mirrors and bumper included? Write down the answer rather than relying on a package name.
Ask for the film’s brand, product name, finish and installation date. If any panels were replaced later, record those separately. Leave unknown details marked “not confirmed.”
2. Ask for the paperwork
Request copies of the installation invoice, warranty documents and any film-replacement records. Ask which shop did the work and whether the seller can help you contact it. Keep only the information needed for the vehicle and film; unrelated personal or payment details can be removed.
Check the terms for the actual product, installation and country, not a different film’s headline warranty.
Before counting on warranty coverage, ask the manufacturer or installer:
- Does this particular warranty continue when the car changes owners?
- What documents or steps would I need?
- What work, if any, would I have to pay for?
3. Have concerns checked before buying
Point out loose edges, tears, stains or areas that look different from neighboring panels. Ask the seller about paint repairs and previous film removal. If something concerns you, arrange a PPF installer’s assessment and ask what they can and cannot establish without removing film.
Do not peel a corner back to investigate it yourself. Use our old-film guide to prepare questions about removal or replacement.
Keep the film check separate from the car inspection. The US Federal Trade Commission recommends an independent mechanical inspection before buying a used car from a dealer. A PPF assessment does not replace that inspection.

4. Agree on the handover
If the seller agrees to address a film issue, write down which panel, what work is included, who will do it and whether it happens before collection. Ask for the finished work’s paperwork too.
Before your first wash, get care instructions for the actual film. Start with our PPF care guide, then follow the product-specific instructions.
Your take-home record: product and finish; installation date; covered panels; installer; documents received; warranty answer; unresolved questions; agreed work.
You do not need every answer immediately. You do need to know which answers are confirmed before making your decision.
