Protection Wrap Film Color Series

A colored protective film that changes the look of a vehicle while covering its painted surface. You can use it for a full color change or smaller accents, with gloss and matte choices. Choose the color and finish from a physical sample; the details below distinguish vehicle use from separately limited watercraft use.

Gloss and matte variants

Painted vehicle surfaces; separate personal-watercraft use above the static waterline

Painted surfaces; check adhesion to powder-coated or water-based paint. Stainless steel is not recommended or warranted. Do not cover sensors/radar.

Separate selectable finishes in one family. No Satin classification; never turn the range into one scalar finish.

Buying and owning this film

Manufacturer-document summary with editorial buying advice. No independent product or comparative performance testing.

Overview

A colored polyurethane film for anything from a contrasting roof to a full vehicle color change. The range includes gloss and matte choices, with color-flip effects among its options. 3M describes heat-assisted recovery from minor surface marks. Choose the actual color and finish on a sample before settling the quote.

What you are buying

The August 2026 bulletin gives a film-plus-adhesive thickness of 7.5–9 mil (0.19–0.23 mm), depending on color. That excludes the removable liner and cap sheet; it is a range, not one specification shared by every shade. Separate installed layer thicknesses are not supplied.

The current US listing and bulletin allow wet or dry installation. An older US installation guide still says dry-only, so ask the shop which current local instructions it is following.

Before you commit

Ask the installer to assess the paint first. Existing dents, scratches and paint texture can remain visible through the film. Keep the color code and roll/lot details with your invoice: 3M notes small lot-to-lot differences and says directional finishes should run consistently across panels.

Painted surfaces are the documented substrate; stainless steel is expressly excluded. 3M also advises against covering sensors or radar equipment.

Warranty in practice

The reviewed vehicle-owner card provides ten years from installation/purchase for yellowing, bubbling and cracking, in the United States and Canada. It covers the original purchaser and cannot be transferred. Keep the completed card and original invoice, and contact the installer first about a claim.

For a covered claim, the stated remedy includes replacement or a film-price refund, removal, and applicable reinstallation by a 3M-selected installer without charge. The card excludes misuse, accidents, misapplication, ordinary wear, impact dents and paint pulled during removal. Damage from ignoring the care instructions is also excluded. No online-registration deadline is stated.

The newer bulletin separately lists personal watercraft above the static waterline and a three-year watercraft warranty headline. The vehicle-owner card above does not establish those boat terms; obtain the applicable marine documents before buying for a boat.

Living with it: vehicle care only

Wait at least 72 hours before washing and one week before waxing. Hand washing is preferred. Remove fuel spills immediately and other contaminants promptly; use a neutral, non-abrasive cleaner and avoid abrasive polishing. If an edge lifts, return to the installer.

Pressure washing has specific nozzle, distance, angle, temperature and pressure limits in the linked care FAQ. The FAQ also gives a narrow alcohol-cleaning exception for fingerprints on matte film, while warning against alcoholic cleaners generally. Ask for finish-specific care advice rather than treating that exception as an all-purpose cleaning method.

Still worth confirming

  • Exact thickness for the chosen color, rather than the family range
  • Current local installation guide and the installer’s workmanship cover
  • Warranty applicability outside the United States and Canada
  • Separate watercraft terms and marine care, if relevant
  • Local color availability and the appearance of any future replacement panel

This is a summary of manufacturer documents, not independent performance testing or a promise of damage-free removal.
